The risk/reward matrix is not the same for someone taking $50k position and someone taking $50mil position.
3. It's better to pay 50%CGT on $50k profit than watch that $50k profit turn into $50k loss.

This is spot on.

Retailers have the advantage of getting those 50%-200% trades with small liquidity. They actually occur relatively frequently.
(I've had 4 in the last 3 months)

In some cases you can still take a position of $50k quite easily.
