Others have presented similar here in the past.
I think if you dig a bit further you’ll find that ASX reported daily “shorts” action accumulates both buys and sells of shorts. Thus those 9.5M “sales” could be made up of anything from 9.5M extra short positions being taken (shares sold) through 3M new shorts (sold) and 6.5M shorts closed (bought) to 9.5M shorts closed (all bought back). The data is next to useless - you’ll need to wait for a service like Shortman which displays aggregate position but 4 days late to know what has happened.
