John Howard pledges $3m for Bennelong
Prime Minister John Howard is targeting voters on his home turf, promising more than $3 million in spending for his electorate of Bennelong in Sydney.

Mr Howard says most of the money would go towards a family and children's community centre.

Mr Howard says a re-elected Coalition Government would also spend nearly $700,000 installing 50 security cameras to combat violence, crime and vandalism around Ryde.

"There are areas of need that are not being met by State Government funding and this is one of those areas," he said.

"We believe direct funding by the Federal Government to the local council, especially for closed circuit TV cameras, is a very effective way of fighting crime in the suburbs."

The latest funding promises come after a weekend poll which suggested Mr Howard is set to lose Bennelong to Labor challenger Maxine McKew.
