PNG Correctional Services Department wants new weapons

Papua New Guinea's Correctional Service Minister Tony Aimo says the department's firearms are out of date and need replacement. He says the department has already received a 9 million Kina or 3.8 million US dollar quote from an Australian company for new weapons.

And Mr Aimo says the Correctional Services Department has put in a bid to the government to purchase the weapons consignment as quoted.

The department has come under attack in the PNG media with critics saying the money would be better spent on upgrading prison facilities and boosting the low morale and discipline among the staff instead of spending it on weapons. But Mr Aimo says while he understands the concerns raised, the whole issue has been misunderstood.
