The patent process in the US is almost a state of perpetual motion.
You only have to change something slightly to gain another protection period.
Dont quote me but over 50% of the drugs approved on the market by the FDA every year are just rehashed versions of something that already exists.
They may develop newer and better products in that period and let some lapse, if they are still best in the market then the changes will be made ahead of time.
It's a protection racket basically in the US and there would be some very rich trade mark attorneys
Not sure it works like that in other countries
