Suprathel was developed by the German Institutes for Textile and Fibre Research Denkendorf (DITF), an automobile textile research group which was focused on developing degradable textiles that wouldn’t harm the environment. DITF developed Suprathel in co-operation with a German Government research group and a major German burns centre. Both Suprathel and Supra SDRM are fully synthetic, once only application, resorbable wound dressings. They are transparent, can be trimmed to size, require no preparation and are typically not stapled into place. The products have a room temperature shelf life of 3 years. They are made from a polylactic acid copolymer composed of polylactide, trimethylene carbonate and e-caprolactone.Suprathel was first approved in the EU in 2004 and then received 510(k) clearance in the US in 2009. It is an epidermal skin substitute, indicated for superficial and partial thickness burns and abrasions and for coverage of split-thickness skin graft donor sites.Supra SDRM “guided wound closure matrix” received 510(k) clearance in 2017 and EU approval in 2019. It is said to combine the benefits of the microporous structure of Suprathel that builds a protective barrier allowing the wound to heal with additional large pores created to enable ingrowth of blood vessels. Supra SDRM is indicated primarily for the management of chronic wounds such as venous and arterial ulcers and diabetic ulcers but can also be used in trauma and surgical wounds and partial thickness burns. Each product comes in 7 or 8 sizes with the SDRM starting at a 18mm disc size. There are definite similarities between PMI’s products and PolyNovo’s, but also differences. It is advised that use of Suprathel be avoided in a wide range of wounds in which we know that BTM has been used with success. These include infected wounds and heavily exuding wounds, necrotic wound areas, old burn wounds and exposed tendon/bone/cartilage/muscle.Also, the PMI products are not indicated for use in full thickness burns, whereas BTM is approved in this indication in Europe and Australia.https://ozmedix.com.au/suprathel/tips-questions/
