The biggest enemies of free speech are gathered together in the alliance between the agrarian socialists of the National Party, Murdoch’s various media megaphones, and the oxymoronically named Liberal Party. They all think that free speech is wonderful, as long as it’s their speech that reaches ears and eyes unhindered. But woe betide anyone on the margins, as they see them, challenging the central certitudes of ‘the alliance’ —in action it’s like watching noisy minor birds mobbing.
