That is a myth propagated by merchant banks andshort sellers. Yes, in a bull market short sellers add depth that enables largefund managers to purchase quantity. However, the large fund managers could alsoachieve these volumes through company placements; therefore the additionalliquidity in bull markets from short sellers is not necessary.

The short sellers worsen the lack of liquidityin bear markets and have an incentive to sell more to drive the market panics.During a normal market, the short sellers can act in unison with other shortsellers to target particular stocks (this is not necessary in bear markets).
