Ovitex comes in three configurations - a lower strength scaffold, a medium-strength scaffold with one smooth side and a higher-strength scaffold with both sides smooth.

Each type is made from layers of biologic material (ovine rumen), which is then stitched/reinforced in a grid pattern with synthetic (polymer) monofilament. The polymer’s role is to hold the biologic layers together and provide additional strength in the early healing phase. All configurations are available with either biodegradable (30-60 days) or non-biodegradable polymer stitching.

While Aroa’s Ovitex seems to be a good product that is selling reasonably well, I would characterise it as a biologic hernia product. The Ovitex products are 94% biologic and 6% synthetic. I’ve found no evidence that Ovitex has any synthetic layer.

Infection is a potential issue for hernia meshes (an infection rate of 8-40%) as highlighted by the clearance earlier this year of an antibiotic-embedded polypropylene hernia mesh.

The hernia mesh market is a very crowded space. Aroa (Tela Bio) is but one player. There are 92 manufacturers in the United States who have clearance for hernia products, with 322 currently valid 510(k) Premarket Notifications. Almost 50 different materials are used in these products, both biologic and synthetic.

PolyNovo has been taking its time in finalising development of its hernia products. This is probably not a bad thing in such a highly competitive market – PolyNovo will need to bring something unique and demonstrably superior to the table.
