Correction: Short sellers exist to profit from and exacerbate the damage these people do.
in what way does a short seller mitigate the damage? They let the price ramp up, then cause as big a crash as they can. So investors in the company end up with less money than if the shorters didn’t exist. How can you call that damage mitigated?
