Last year’s flu season put enormous strain on hospitals. Mandatory flu vaccination for health workers should assist in reducing absenteeism over the coming months as well as reduce risk to the health of workers and risk of transmission to patients. You absolutely don’t want to see workers or patients getting the flu on top of Covid-19.

With respect to treatment for Covid-19 itself, Melbourne’s Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research hopes to commence within four weeks a trial of the anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, in 2250 volunteer nurses, doctors, paramedics and allied healthcare workers. The volunteers will take daily pills for 4 months, with half of them taking the drug and the other half a placebo. They are hoping to find that the drug blocks Covid-19 infection for as long as the pills are taken.
