Also, I should have mentioned that it is important not to make the assumption that expiry of one patent on a product means that the product is fair game.
Multiple patents can overlap. Often a method patent is filed a few years after the original patent, which usually focuses on composition. So even when the composition patent expires there is still protection of the production method.
A further tactic is to use a combination of know-how (trade secret) and patent to keep competitors at bay.
