In the Sunday Mail (NewsCorp) today is the story of “The Miracle of Baby Saylor”.

After a scan had detected a large tumour at the base of Saylor’s spine and her mother went into labour at just 28 weeks, a team of 25 surgeons and specialist medical staff was assembled to perform a C-section delivery followed by immediate surgery to remove the tumour.

The prognosis for the baby was extremely poor. The little girl weighed just 1025g and the fast-growing tumour, known as a sacrococcygeal teratoma, weighed more than 2kg and measured 15cm by 16cm by 15cm.

Mater Mothers’ Hospital neonatologist Richard Mausling said it was “without a doubt” the biggest tumour he had seen removed from a newborn baby.

The tumour, which also extended into the pelvis and abdomen, was removed in a 6 hour operation that included removing part of the tailbone. With not enough skin on Saylor's body to cover the large wound, BTM was applied in another surgery, performed by Paediatric Burns Professor Roy Kimble from Royal Queensland Children’s Hospital.

After spending 77 days in neonatal intensive care, Saylor is now home with her parents and is said to be doing “really well”.
