The success of CSL, PolyNovo chief executive Paul Brennan says, demonstrates that Australia isn't the "dumb economy" that Harvard University's Atlas of Economy Complexity suggested.

"I found that offensive because Australia has a whole range of really smart people and technologies," he said. "CSL, PolyNovo, ResMed, Cochlear and Medical Developments and a whole range of other companies are demonstrating that we're manufacturing locally, we have smart people, disruptive technologies and we're all penetrating the largest market in the world, being the US.

"Companies in Australia are changing the guard and we have the opportunity to show we aren't dumb ... we just have to commercialise what we've got and adopt the confidence needed to go to market."

Even with the major shares sell-off this month, the S&P/ASX 200 healthcare index is still trading up 36.17 per cent on where it was this time last year, with CSL the biggest contributor to the index.
