One side of the market cap is fixed until the company issues more shares via a cash raise etc, it is the SP that drives the market cap up and down most of the time, it is driven by peoples sentiments in the main, that can come from FA where some people do research and figure out what may happen going forward and invest accordingly, then the TA people join the party after the see the SP either going up or down and that adds to the sentiment, but there is also a new player on the block over the last few years, these people/companies manipulate the SP using algorithms for bot trading, I guess you could also add in the shorters to this as well, where in some cases people sell shares they don't even own, or they borrow them from brokers for the same purpose, to drive the SP down.
Who was it that said share trading is easy? I don't reckon it is, not with all those variables.
