POC1 Sample Pre-treatment

Not sure if this has been covered in any detail?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the ‘sample pre-treatment’ side of POC1?

I’m thinking along the lines of what are referred to as ‘heterophilic antibodies’ as these are known to be a major source of interference with immunoassays. Perhaps I’m miles off-course?

We use HBT (Heterohile Blocking Reagent) in our lab where immunoassay results are suspect. This is very rarely performed and quite possibly underperformed considering their presence is not uncommon (between 10 and 40% if the link below is to be believed). Interference is only investigated when results have been queried by the requesting Dr & the results cannot be explained by the patients clinical picture.

Without getting too excited, if this is what POC1 pre-treatment is about then it may well be a decent draw-card and point of difference in reliability to competitors & further make the case for the lean to POC over laboratory testing.

Could be a good discussion point, as far as I can determine there are no other main interference effects that are considered – others here may have a more in-depth understanding of interferences I’ve not thought of?
