Generally agree with your comments lisking. However when you say "people are fundamentally good" you depart from your rational argument.
People are neither good nor evil. Despite the phenomenon of altruism, people, in general, act out of their own best interests. We are no different from the animals. If there is a difference it is one of time span. In other words, in the short term, we may display some altruism but in the longer term, it's all self interest. Just like the animals.
