Poland: a copper Eldorado
20th February 2013
As of February 1, 2013, there were 17 copper ore exploration licenses owned by foreign companies in Poland. Within that number, 13 licenses are held by Miedzi Copper Corporation, owned by Canadian investment fund Lumina Capital.
The remaining four licenses were granted to companies from the US capital group Electrum. Poland's copper and silver giant KGHM is the holder of one exploration and identification license and two identification licenses. Another exploration and identification license belongs to Polmetal, part of the Sydney-listed Balamara Resources.
Right now, there are 2 companies trying to get new licenses in Poland. KGHM wants to get 4 new ones, and Miedzi Copper Corporation is seeking 7. The Ministry of Environment will grant three of these on March 6.
