From personal experience 1952-56 I can confirm that all 400 cadets at Bundaberg State High School had a personal .303 for the duration of their service. Weapons were kept under lock and key at the school when not in use and if the rifles were carried by the students on a special occasion such as in transit to camp, Anzac Day parade, etc.the bolts were kept by the quartermaster. We were using ammo made in 1942 and I think when the surplus ammo was used the Army Cadets fizzled out. Our unit also had about 6 Bren guns, two Vickers medium machine guns, and a 3 inch mortar.
An excellent program and not a phone in sight.....
