A POLICE officer has been stabbed in the neck at a Michigan airport in what US authorities are treating as an act of terrorism.
The suspect, a Canadian passport holder from Quebec, was taken into custody following the alleged attack at Bishop International Airport in the city of Flint on Wednesday.
Federal prosecutors confirmed they have charged the suspect with committing violence at an airport. They identified him as Amor Ftouhi.
The FBI, which is leading the investigation, said Ftouhi said something similar to “you have killed people in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and we are all going to die.”
The FBI added in the criminal complaint that Ftouhi asked an officer who subdued him why he didn’t kill him.
Lieutenant Jeff Neville was set upon just before 10am local time, prompting a panicked evacuation of the airport and increased security elsewhere in the city.
A law enforcement official said the FBI is looking at terrorism as a likely motive.
A second police source told AP there investigating witness reports that the suspect made statements during the stabbing, including saying “Allahu akbar” - the Arabic phrase for “God is great”.
