Just a point of clarification here. Polygamy is not illegal in Australia but bigamy is.
Therefore a person who has multiple wives (or husbands) through marriages overseas continues to be married to them if they migrate to Australia.
The traditional ban on bigamy is based on ancient religous taboos as buggery was. Buggery is now legal but bigamy is not.
