    Found a patent from Sultanov et al on a slightly different method used to extract polyprenols.

    So looks like they can patent the method for a unique extract.

    Abstract

    Wood greens (leaves or needles with wood admixts.) are processed to recover valuable components by extn. with an org. solvent, followed by pptn. and filtration of waxes, alkali soln.-mediated sepn. of free acids from a soln. of extd. substances in a hydrocarbon solvent, sepn. of the neutralized soln. into a soln. of neutral substances in the hydrocarbon solvent and an aq. soln. of org. acid salts, acidification of the aq. soln. with an inorg. or org. acid, isolation of chlorophyllins and fatty and resin acids, sepn. of the diterpene acids and higher fatty acids, distn. of the solvent from the neutral substances, and sepn. of the neutral substances. The diterpene acids and higher fatty acids are treated with an alc. in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst, followed by distg. off the alc. and neutralizing the diterpene acids and the catalyst using an inorg. base. The higher fatty acid esters are extd. with a hydrocarbon solvent, the aq. alkali soln. is acidified, and freed diterpene acids are extd. with a hydrocarbon solvent. The hydrocarbon solvent is evapd. to a concn. of diterpene acids of 30-50% to afford a rodent repellent. The neutral substances are successively extd. with acetone and a C1-C3-alc. at a ratio of the neutral substances to the extractant from 1:2 to 1:5. Treatment with acetone gives mixts. of higher fatty acid esters of triterpene alcs., sterins, and fatty alcs.; and an acetone-sol. residue. The residue is treated with an alc. to afford diterpene alcs. and alc.-insol. compds. The alc.-insol. compds. are sapond. with an alkali-alc. soln. to give a polyprenol-contg. mixt., which is subjected to chromatog. on silica gel at a substance/adsorbent ratio of 1:10 using hexane and hexane with 5-10% vol. of di-Et ether at an adsorbent/solvent ratio of 1:1 to isolate polyprenols.
