The shorts might just prevail if there is a serious downturn in the market as a whole, bu I would categorise such as luck.
Rather than a solid company such as TPM, a cunning shorter would pick a lame-duck which might sink even in a bull market, and would most certainly sink without trace even in a mild recession.
