while sport has been seen as the great escape from tedium for the 'common people' since before Ancient Rome. as entertainment it is par excellence and ppl do love to pay as much for sport as we do for a great concert.
I agree with you on all else though. prima donnas and magnates go well together imo.
you don't see many announcements of state govt building a new concert venue, but they'll spend $Bs on a NRL stadium or two.
