Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says he will soon announce how millions of dollars set aside in the state budget for the Latrobe Valley will be used to address the region's economic diversity.

The State Government provided $40 million in this year's budget to help the Latrobe Valley transition away from coal-fired power generation.

The Government's infrastructure advisory body has detailed the need to move towards low-carbon energy production over the next 30 years.

Mr Andrews said the Government was not ready to announce how the $40 million would be spent.

However, he said any economic transition for the region would include more than a move away from brown coal.

"In terms of economic development, I want to see more important economic diversity in the Valley," he said.

"That funding will no doubt support that and we'll have more to say about that soon."

Mr Andrews said the economic transition plan would take time.

"Base-load power in our state is fuelled, is powered, is sourced from brown coal," he said.

"The notion that you can just flick a switch and suddenly change overnight where we get out energy, where we get a stable and secure supply - that's never made any sense to me."
