In the RIU Resources Investor Roadshow Audio posted by Clark888. Chris Giles uses the analogy of finding nugget gold at Portia to that of determining the number of sultana's in a Sultana cake. Traditional essaying can miss Sultana's and because the gold nuggets at Portia can be quite large and in patches, it only takes a few missed nuggets to have a big impact on the result. The washing method is meant to stop this happening giving a more accurate result.
