China has launched a 24.6 billion yuan coal gasification plant capable of producing 12 million cubic metres of natural gas a day, official news agency Xinhua said on Monday.
The plant, to be located in the old coal city of Fuxin in northeast China's Liaoning province, will be completed in four years and will also produce by-products like naphtha.
A subsidiary of the state power giant Datang Group, the parent of Hong Kong-listed Datang International Power <0991.HK>, will build the facility.
The mayor of Fuxin, Pan Liguo, told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of China's parliamentary session earlier this month that the project would process 20.6 million tonnes of coal a year in its first phase, shipped from mines in the neighbouring Xilin Gol region of Inner Mongolia.
