BYD net profit accelerates 6.5 times on green-car sales

GUANGZHOU, China -- BYD's net profit likely soared about 550% to 2.82 billion yuan ($431 million) for the fiscal year ended in December, preliminary results show, as generous government subsidies fueled brisk sales of eco-friendly vehicles.
The Chinese automaker's sales likely came to 80.01 billion yuan. The new Tang plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicle sold particularly well, while orders for the K9 electric bus skyrocketed. The sale of BYD's electronic components business also boosted profits.
BYD plans to release official earnings figures in late March.
