    That is correct. You would only culture onto another petri dish with the antibiotic only if the first petri dish picked up bacterial growth.

    There are 2 factors to consider:
    1. Contamination or multiple organisms in a sample - this can complicate DNA/RNA analysis in comparison with culture (but the technology is always improving)

    2. Isolation of the bacterial colony, in case of multiple bugs in the sample to regrow them on another petri dish with the antibiotic (to see if the drug inhibit their growth) could not be done without the initial culture.

    Speedy detection with DNA/RNA is very useful initially (they will always be faster than culture) but culture is still required
