Pele Broberg wants a referendum on Uranium. The uranium issue should not determine where the voters place their vote for the Inatsisart committee. Therefore, the population must be heard directly in an indicative referendum if it is in favor of Naleraq, who is ready with a bill for the autumn assembly.
The chairman of Naleraq, Pele Broberg is ready for an indicative referendum on Uranium next year. Therefore, he has sent a draft law for consultation.
The proposal is for an indicative referendum to be held on 4 April 2023 on the repeal of the Inatsisartutlov on the prohibition of preliminary investigation, research and exploitation of uranium, etc.
Pele Broberg intends to present the bill to the autumn session.
Tired of narrow political majorities, and want to hear the people
In the background to the hearing, Pele Broberg writes that in 2013, it was a narrow majority in Inatsisartut that decided to abolish the "zero tolerance" on mining of uranium, just as in 2021 it was a narrow majority that adopted the Inatsisartut law on the prohibition of preliminary investigation, exploration and exploitation of uranium.
Broberg believes that the big issue of uranium can have an impact on the electorate of Inatsisartut, if voters vote for politicians just because they agree on the uranium issue.
- Naleraq believes that this is not beneficial for either democracy or the country's development in general.
Should the ban on uranium be lifted?
The proposal will result in Inatsisartut, through an indicative referendum, being presented with a clear statement of opinion from the country's citizens on the issue of uranium extraction, the reasoning goes on.
Specifically, Nalaraq will ask the population to take a stand on lifting the ban that was introduced against preliminary investigation, research and exploitation of uranium last year.
The indicative referendum is prepared and carried out according to the same guidelines that apply to elections for Inatsisartut, the bill states.
Personally, I'm hoping this issue of the "Ban U Bill" will be settled by the arbitrators in favor of GML well before April next year. In any case, things are happening behind the scenes in Greenland.
