Apology 'may have impact' on mining boom

The apology to Aborigines could have substantial - but unknown - implications for Australia's booming resources industry, a private US intelligence service claims.

This, in turn, could have geopolitical impacts outside Australia, the group Stratfor says in an analysis.

Stratfor, which claims to be the world's leading professional intelligence service on global business, economic, security and geopolitics, says the apology was genuine and "undoubtedly" well-received.

"Is this just well-meaning gesture politics or is it likely to put a brake on and impose heavy costs on the country's biggest industry, mining," Stratfor analyst Colin Chapman said in a podcast.

There would be extreme sensitivity to Aboriginal opinion and to the use of Aboriginal land for mining, particularly high-value uranium, he said.

Most uranium, if not all, was on or close to Aboriginal lands.

"This does not mean that mining will stop expanding," Mr Chapman said.

"Some Aboriginal leaders have proven themselves to be shrewd negotiators.

"The costs of compensation for land use for mining has been rising sharply (and) it will rise again.

Mr Chapman said the federal government would be trying to make sure that money raised from mining licences would not, where possible, be used for "binge drinking or buying Land Cruisers".

Mr Chapman predicted there would be fresh schemes to see that Aboriginal men and women trained for the highly-paid jobs in the mining industry, many now filled by migrants.

The apology would allow many Australians to feel more at peace after many years of guilt, he said.

"It will also inevitably lead to a new layer of issues that will need to be addressed by the burgeoning resources industry which of course has expanded long after the years of the stolen generation.

"But that doesn't mean though that the miners will be off the hook."/End Quote

I've been impressed with the way THR Directors have been working through various Issues like possible Workforce Training etc. with the Traditional Owners of Molyhil and I think Mr John Young and Mr John Barr are a good Team to have on our side for this situation.

No responsibility taken for any losses in association with this Posting.

    A happy,
