I thought we need a new thread to discuss this protected animal...
I have spent a bit of time researching, finding answers to the problems, people have living in harmony with wildlife...

so for kingpins, with the avocado tree...
from memory, your photo showed the tree near a shed, and with fences close by ???
this means, extra access points for mr possum and family...

if the tree was not surrounded by other access points, you could stop possum going from the ground to the trunk..
with aluminium wraps around the main trunk....possum cannot climb the slippery surface...
they also suggest blood and bone at the base of tree is a deterrent, or napthalene, or mothballs....there is also garlic and chillie mixture mentioned...

a product called 'possoff' may interest you

Protecting plants. If it is practical, possums can be physically excluded by fencing. An unsupported 'floppy-topped' fence can be added to an existing fence. It is more likely to prevent possum intrusions than a normal fence. Large fruit trees can have a metal collar fitted. Smaller plants or vegetables can be covered with plastic bird netting. Various chemical deterrents may include quassia chips, garlic spray, D-Ter, POSS-OFF (a natural Possum deterrent) or even spreading blood and bone fertiliser around the base of plants. ?

ps, there are no visits from the cats, when possum family make regular visits.....possums leave a scent, which warns off the cats...and possum is likely to attack said cat visitors...
my brother used to live in my house and feed the possums....after my brother found new digs, the house was vacant for regular weekly intervals
for a year, I travelled each week, spending a week in Melb, then a week in Albury...the cats were regular visitors...
then I moved to Albury permanently a year ago, and commenced feeding the possum family.....the cats no longer visit...
ps I love cats, dont get me wrong...but not cats that are allowed out at night to raid the bird nests, etc

    cheers
