DJ. Australia MIM: Mount Isa Copper Smelter Ops Halted; Fire
SINGAPORE, June 13 (OsterDowJones) - Australia's base metals producer MIM Holdings Ltd. (A.MIM) said Thursday a fire broke out at its Mount Isa copper smelter in Queensland and production has been halted.
"We don't expect that there will be a material impact on production. Otherwise, we would have made a statement to the stock exchange, which we didn't," spokesman Collin Myers told OsterDowJones.
The copper smelter was producing 4,000-5,000 metric tons a week prior to the fire, which broke out at the smelter's tapping floor at 0220 GMT Thursday (10:20 p.m. EDT Wednesday) and was later extinguished.
"There was no threat or risks to employees. The area was evacuated," Myers said.
Myers couldn't immediately say when the smelter will resume operations.
