Hyundai and Skoda, to name just 2, were seen as poor brands 10 years ago. Now they make affordable cars and the standard has improved. I wouldn't buy one personally, but you see plenty of them on the roads so they're clearly widely acceptable/affordable.
The Chinese aren't known for their (ice) cars I agree. But they've got a jump on EVs (Tesla excepted) and are trying to position themselves to be the producers of Hyundai/Skoda equivalents of the EV world in future years, ie half decent and cheap.
