    A mate of mine is a refinery shutdown maintence expert for BP. They were recently given a high level presentation on a number of different things by senior management.

    2 of the things he took away, were,

    based on current production and known reserves

    World Oil supply has a 45 year time frame till it runs out
    world Coal has a 118 year time frame till it runs out

    This equation does not include any increase in demand for these energy sources going forward ie. urbanisation of China or other tiger economies
