Südharz Kali GmbH claims to propose a location for a new potash mine in northern Thuringia later this year. "We will comment on a possible location in a feasibility study in the course of 2022," said German regional manager Babette Winter on Tuesday on request. By July, a study should also be submitted on how the extraction of the raw material can take place without permanent stockpiles or saline wastewater. Currently, the company founded in Australia is exploring potash deposits in northern Thuringia.

The raw material is there, "and there are enough people who believe in this raw material," Ramelow wrote in the short message service Twitter. Potash mining has a long tradition in the region. After reunification, several pits had been shut down - including the contested Kali plant Bischofferode. Ramelow had still accompanied the labour dispute of the miners of Bischofferode as a trade unionist at that time.

According to the company, the investigation of a first drill core from the Ohmgebirge has shown a thickness of potash salt of about eleven metres in length with an average content of 14.4 percent potassium oxide. This confirmed values of a historical borehole.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, Kali Südharz GmbH is a relatively young company that has only been explored so far and does not yet operate mining. This means that there is still no experience of how sustainably the company actually wants to and can operate mining.
