Potato shortage warning from farmers Fri, Jan 26, 2007
A potato shortage could be on the way in Donegal following the recent spate of inclement weather.
The National Chairman of the IFA's Potato Committee, Donegal-man William Monagle told this week's meeting of the Association in Raphoe that potato farmers in Donegal were very worried about the affects of the weather on the current harvest.
"There is a lot of concern among farmers at the moment as there is still 30 per cent of the crop to be harvested. This is very unusual for this time of the year," he said.
He continued: "If the weather doesn't improve there could be a scarceness of potatoes. And more importantly the frost could be disastrous on them."
On a nation-wide basis Donegal is currently producing the best quality potatoes, according to IFA County Chairman, Keith Roulston.
