Observatory denies reports of tremors
They reported that the tremors occurred in Tambores (between Paysandú and Tacuarembó), in Cerro Padilla, Guichón, Piedra Sola, Queguay and Corrales de Paysandú. Neighbors said they felt explosions and tremors near the work area of the oil company Schuepbach Energy Uruguay SRL. The group Uruguay Libre de Megaminería (ULM) linked the tremors to the activities of the company. In a statement, on Sunday 25, the group expressed dissatisfaction with official explanations, questioned the inadequate inspection and denounced "misinformation" in the face of "large-scale events."
The government informed them that exploration drilling has not yet begun and that preparatory work is under way. "None of transactions is capable of generating elements such as earthquakes or explosions, as they are no different from those that run daily throughout the country in order to obtain groundwater in the surface layers , " said Search Nestor Pitched, director National Mining.
The Geophysical Observatory of Uruguay, which includes the National Mining and Geology Department and the Faculty of Sciences, has a network of accelerometers and seismometers throughout the country. The observatory analyzed the records of the days and times when the neighbors felt tremors. In the report sent to the National Emergency System, which was accessed by Pesquisa , analyzes the events of June 6, 13, 19 and 21, and concludes that "there are no natural or explosive events or seismic events."
The analysis was validated by the Center of Seismology of the University of San Pablo. Another allegation refers to tremors on June 7, but this supposed quake was not recorded either.
However, the report clarifies that low-load explosions may not be recorded. "Although the equipment is highly sensitive, there is a limit on the minimum detectable distance of events, which is variable according to the magnitude of said event," he details.
Leda Sánchez, professor of the Department of Internal Geodynamics of the Faculty of Sciences and member of the observatory, commented that in that area the network is robust. In Arapey there is a seismometer and accelerometer, in Paso de los Toros an accelerometer and in Tacuarembó an accelerometer and a seismometer. None detected seismic events.
"The surface blasting may not have felt, it depends on the amount of charge. But if there was something that energized the soil, we should have seen it, "said Sanchez to Busca .
