RG146 is a somewhat confusing concept. Why? Because RG146 applies to a specific areas within financial planning. So you can be "RG146 compliant" in Super, Investments and Insurance, but "not RG146 compliant" in Estate Planning, Margin Lending and SMSF.

For simplicity sake, most people in the industry complete a Diploma of Financial Planning (DFP) or Advanced DFP (ADFP), which gives them enough coverage to be RG146 compliant in most areas.

The time it takes to complete depends on where you study. Some places take about a week/month to complete (I wouldn't recommend). Other places (e.g. Kaplan), an take years and work in trimesters (approx. 8 subjects at 2 subjects per trimester = just over a year).
