you've got it the wrong way round.
Degenerative brain diseases aren't caused by accumulating damage to the brain; accumulating damage to the brain is caused by degenerative brain diseases.
Stop the disease and you stop the damage. So early detection and treatment that halts the disease would indeed halt the damage to the brain.
Hopefully, PBT is just such a treatment and it can slow or even stop (or in our dreams, help reverse) the progress of the disease and therefore the resulting damage.
