Mudgas refers to the equipment used by the mudloggers to analyze entrained gas sampled from the mud returning from the hole. The equipment consists of a total gas detector which gives a measurement of how much gas is in the mud and a gas chromatograph which samples the gas every few minutes and gives a break down of the component alkane gases C1 through to usually C5. Both panels are usually flame ionization detector (FID) equipped. There is usually also a CO2 detector as part of the gas equipment.
