You are correct in that the well is designed to intersect the Alameda structure at its crest. The Marti-5 well drilled through the structures flank. I wouldn't use the term "distal edge of the Alameda reservoir" in this context as it implies geologically something very different.
Peter Stickland mentioned that Marti-5 was "drilled pre seismic and believed to be have been based on gravity data and surface seeps". So there is no knowing what the form of the structure CUPET was targeting looked like i.e. the distribution of surface oil seeps could have played a major part in the well's location. Having worked with gravity data from that time it's very likely that it would have defined the key tectonic components at depth reasonably well but with the amount of structuring in the area it could have been difficult to adequately isolate the best location to drill on individual structures.
