Well Google bought Youtube because it was the database for video content, to recreate a database of that size would take far to long and cost far to much so the acquisition made sense.

The Whatsapp acquisition doesn't make sense really besides eliminating competition from the market. They released messenger shortly after and now it does the same thing its just Facebooks own brand and the competition is owned by Facebook also...

There is no MOAT around this business to stop competitors replicating it they could make it far superior with far deeper pockets in a lot less time.
