China Ministry: To Shut 291,000 Tons Outdated Copper Output Capacity BEIJING (Dow Jones)--China plans to eliminate 26.27 million metric tons of steel production capacity and 291,000 tons of copper smelting capacity this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in a statement Tuesday. The ministry last month vowed to cull the country's vast herds of metal-producing firms this year, singling out the aluminum sector as a haven for disorderly and environmentally-unfriendly development, but including other major metal sectors in the policy sweep. On Tuesday, it said it would also shut down 26.53 million tons of iron smelting capacity, 600,000 tons of aluminum capacity and 585,000 tons of lead smelting capacity, 337,000 tons of zinc smelting capacity and 1.86 million tons of ferro-alloy output capacity, it said. The elimination of steel capacity will be focused on the producing provinces of Hebei, Henan, Shandong and Shanxi, among others, it said. -By Chuin-Wei Yap, Dow Jones Newswires
