A friend of mine started an a qualified Electrician.
He worked privately then got a job an Electrical
Inspector with ActewAGL - Canberra's main
power supplier. He did well and became an
Executive - later working in the Dealing
Room where supplies of bulk electricity
are traded up and down the East Coast.
That's where he faced the ethical dilemma
similar to what power traders faced in the
US at utilities like Enron were generators
(under the pretext of maintenance) were
shut down in peak-load times to push
trading profits to sky-high levels.
Enron eventually crashed and burned.
But my friend had a nervous breakdown
from the ethical dilemma of power trading.
He never completely recovered and was put
out to grass with a Redundancy Package.
Having a conscience and capitalism are not
compatible. You have to choose one or the
other or go mad - just like my friend did.
