Power corrupts

    ...and absolute power corrupts absolutely, or so the saying/quote goes.

    So Henry VIII must have been a living embodiment of that (is that a tautology?), when either in a rage or spite or spiteful rage, he ordered the destruction of the monasteries because the Pope wouldn't give him a divorce.
    So many beautiful buildings were knocked and.torn down by his command, and no doubt with the gleeful assistance of local grandees eager to get their hands on some of the loot.

    Whitby Abbey is one such. When you look at the ruins and imagine what a beautiful building it would have been and could still be, I for one am struck by the awful waste brought about by people over the ages. Just imagine the uses many of these buildings which may have survived.could have been put to over the centuries and still today.

    Man is such a destructive species.
