Absolutely it's in the best interests of the country to retain the grid. That's why it should remain in public hands, so it remains functional and supported while encouraging rather than penalising the shift to home generation and higher efficiency. When the world is trying to shift towards reduced emissions, it's counterproductive to have the electricity distribution networks owned by companies whose business model requires ever increasing usage of power provided by traditional generators.
