They can't stop you going off the grid. Thats true Janti. Hence my point in numerous other posts that like sewerage, if it goes past your door, you should be charged a base fee, they also do similar with water, slightly diff in that they provide x amount included in the base fee.
Water, sewerage, electricity, all public utilities and as Tristanc states, should not have to operate at a profit. But that comes from the overreach of todays gov needeing more and more funds to poke their nose into things they shouldn't have anything to do with.

As long as every person is contributing to the maintenance of the grid and that includes the cost of the generating plants, which keeps the cost of power down for all users, business domestic, govt,industry, then they can have all the solar panels they want.
