You need some high-discharge, rapid-recharge storage to go alongside hydrogen fuel cells because a fuel cell can't deliver the short sharp peaks you need for a road vehicle. Using only the fuel cell it takes a long time to get rolling. That's fine for a train or a ship. Not so fine for a truck.
For better or worse, Lithium technology is currently the best for this purpose.
