current electrolyers have an efficiency of 70+%. Some new technologies are promising 95%...(Hysata) but even these won't charge the cost of hydrogen by any order of magnitude. After 95% what can you really do??? 1 or 2 % won't change the world.
Well it's all about $$$$ cutting the cost through automation & scaling, which is what Fortescue is doing

after that what will is new ideas like SPARC which bypass the electricity step completely and go straight from solar to hydrogen.
all of these are pilot technologies which should be entering production within 5.5 years, but barely able to make a dent in the gas market in such a short period.
not to mention the Trillion dollars required to build solar and wind farms, it's going to take time and a lot of it
